Poland Family Genealogy

The preceeding  generations of the Poland family are:

About 1915

My great-grandfather, Clarence Beauregard "Captain Jack" Poland, was born on 14 December 1872 in New Orleans, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, and died on 31 January 1956 in Ontario, San Bernardino County, California.

He was the clerk of the North Carolina Legislature, a writer, and publicist.

Carolina "Carrie" Bell Johnson was born in August 1875 in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, and died on 17 January 1929 in Spencer, Roane County, West Virginia.

They married on  24 October 1896 and divorced in July 1903, both in Wake County, North Carolina.

Thomas Poland, Jr. was born before 1779 in Virginia, and died before 29 October 1838 in Montgomery County, Alabama.

Nancy Naomi Moseley was born about 1790 in Edgefield County, South Carolina and died about 1852 in Alabama.

She was partially Native American, a 3/16th Chalakatha-Thawikila-Cherokee-Chickasaw-Metis.

They married about 1811 in South Carolina.

It's interesting to note that Thomas' brother, Nelson, married Nancy Naomi's sister, Hannah. Descendants of that line also survive today.

Thomas Poland, Sr. was born  about 1745 in Dale City Parish, Chesterfield County, Virginia, and died after 1811.

He served as a Lieutenant in the Chesterfield County, Virginia Militia under Captain Richard Baugh in the Revolutionary War.

Sarah "Salley" (her maiden name is not known) was born about 1750 in Chesterfield County, Virginia, and died  after 1795.

Thomas Poland, Sr.'s father is not known for certain. I have listed here John, the most likely candidate, but it could be his brother, Joseph, or some unknown brother. However, Thomas' grandfather is clearly documented, due to a will the grandfather wrote, which names his grandson, Thomas.

John Poland was born in 1715 in Henrico County, Virginia, and died in December 1783 in Nash County, North Carolina.

Jane Price was born between 1728 and 1730 in Virginia, and died before 1793 in Chesterfield County, Virginia.

Thomas Poland, Jr. (the grandfather) was born in Virginia in 1680 and died in 1754 at Roxdale Manor, Dale Parish, Chesterfield County, Virginia .

Mary Neil Jordan was born in 1683 in Henrico County, Virginia, and died in 1763 in Henrico County, Virginia.

They married in 1705 in Henrico County, Virginia.

Thomas Poland, Sr. was born about 1642. It is uncertain whether he was born in Britain or in Virginia. He died in 1718 in Henrico County, Virginia.

Eleanor Bowman was born about 1630 and died after 1704.

They married between 1667 and 1678 in Henrico County, Virginia.

I have found no convincing documentation which allows me to take the family line any further than this. Some people argue that Thomas Poland is the son of John Pollan, who was born in 1613 in Britain, arrived in Yorktown, Virginia in 1636 on the "Friendshipe", married Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) in 1640, and died in June 1674 in Charles Parish, York County, Virginia. It would be nice to believe this, but I can find no supporting documentation.

John Stratton Poland, Sr. was born on 31 December 1812 in South Carolina, and died on 12 July 1882 in Texarkana, Bowie County, Texas, when a violent storm or tornado caused a building to collapse on him. His head was never recovered.

He was a clerk in New Orleans, and a Faro dealer (gambler) in Texarkana.

He served as a Sergeant in Company A, Raiford's Battalion, Alabama Volunteers in the Mexican-American War.

Caroline "Carrie" Gray was born in 1834 in Tennessee, and died on 18 April 1900 in Dyersburg, Dyer County, Tennessee.

They married on 20 July 1856 in Rusk County, Texas.
