Davis Family Genealogy



The preceeding  generations of the Davis family are:

 

My great-grandfather, Henry Charles Davis, was born on 06 December 1863 in Russell County, Virginia, and died before 1910 when he was hit by a train while walking along the railroad track between Castlewood and Fink in Russell County, Virginia.

Mary B Humphreys was born about 1863 in Virginia and died after 1910 (place and date unknown).

They were married on 12 May 1881 in Tazewell County, Virginia.

Thomas Walton Davis was born on 16 November 1820 in Tazewell County, Virginia, and died on 21 February 1894 in Honaker, Russell County, Virginia.

He was a surveyor, farmer, and agent for the Warder Company of Philadelphia, as well as New Garden Postmaster.  

He served as a Private in the 72nd Regiment, Russell County, Virginia Militia in the Civil War.

Isobel Clark was born on 06 May 1822 in Russell County, Virginia, and died in 1900 in Russell County, Virginia.

They were married  on 07 Apr 1840 in Swords Creek, Russell County, Virginia.

Thomas Davis was born in 1795 in Pounding Mill, Tazewell County, Virginia, and died in January 1864 in Tazewell County, Virginia.

He was the Tazewell County Deputy Surveyor, Constable for the Western District of Tazewell County, and a Justice of the Peace.

He was an Ensign in Captain Thomas Brown's Company of riflemen in the Tazewell County Militia.

Mary "Polly" Laird was born on 10 February 1807 in Tazewell County, Virginia, and died in 20 May 1865 in Tazewell County, Virginia.

They were married on 26 November 1827 in Tazewell County, Virginia.



John "Big John" Davis was born about 1775 in Alexandria, Virginia, and died on 15 April 1826 in Pounding Mill, Tazewell County, Virginia.

Katherine "Peggy" Walton was born in 1770 in Virginia and died in February 1850 in Tazewell, Tazewell County, Virginia.

They were married before 1794 in Virginia.

 

Reverend Thomas Davis, Jr. was born about 1745 in Norfolk, Virginia, and died on 03 December 1815 in Hungar's Parish, Northampton County, Virginia.

He obtained a B. A. degree from William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia, and was an Usher (essentially a graduate Teaching Assistant) there in 1768.

He was a Church of England (Anglican), then Episcopal Minister, ordained on 21 September 1773. He was the Rector of Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia.
During the Revolutionary War, he was the Chaplain for the 4th Virginia Regiment, and the 1st Light Dragoon Regiment of Cavalry.

He was with General Washington's Army at Valley Forge, until it was decided that the more mobile cavalry units should be moved elsewhere.​

On 15 May 1779, he was captured by the British. Although Chaplains were normally considered non-combatants, and released immediately if captured, he wasn't, because he was considered an instigator of the Revolution. He was taken to New York, and imprisoned on the ship "Old Jersey" in Brooklyn Harbor, under horrible conditions. He was eventually released, and returned to Virginia, probably sometime in 1780.

He was a member of, and Chaplain for, the same Masonic Lodge in Alexandria, Virginia that President George Washington joined.

He performed the marriage ceremony for Lawrence Lewis, favorite nephew of President George Washington, and  Eleanor Parke Custis,  granddaughter of Mrs. Martha Washington. He also performed the marriage ceremony for Bernard Moore Carter, son of Charles Carter, Esq., of Shirley Plantation , and Lucy Grymes Lee, daughter of General Henry  Lee of Stratford Plantation.
He performed the funerals for both former President George Washington and Mrs. Martha Washington.

Elizabeth Plater (Kenner) was born on 7 August 1742 in Sotterly, St Mary's County, Maryland, and died on 09 May 1803 at the Clermont Estate in Alexandria, Virginia.

They were married before 1774 in Virginia.



Reverend Thomas Davis, Sr. was born before 1723 in Leyland, Lancashire, England, and died before 03 March 1779 in Nansemond County, Virginia.

He was a Church of England (Anglican) Minister, ordained 22 September 1754.

In 1766, he was selected as the Moderator of the Sons of Liberty in Norfolk, Virginia.

Mary (maiden name unknown) died after 3 March 1779.

Their marriage date and place is not known.

 

Richard Davis was born in 1678 in Kirkham, Lancashire, England and died in Leyland, Lancashire, England.

Ellen Whittle was born in 1675 in Ffarington, Lancashire, England.

They were married oon 15 Apr 1705 in Clifton Kirkham Parish, Lancashire, England.

 

Thomas Davis and Margaret Davis were Richard's parent's.
